Mumbai University - Students give courses thumbs down

From- http://www.hindustantimes.com
The postgraduate (PG) courses offered by Mumbai University (MU) at its Kalina campus are losing their sheen among students, who prefer to take up higher education in other universities. Karen Pineiro, 21, is doing her first-year masters in political science at Delhi University (DU) after

graduating from St Xavier’s College in Mumbai. Although MU offers political science at the postgraduate level, the Andheri resident did not even considered the possibility. “Since my final year of graduation, I started preparing to apply to Delhi University. Mumbai was never an option. The course, campus, brand, and student and faculty quality are better at DU. Job prospects after a masters from DU are also better,” said Pineiro.
For some who stay back in Mumbai after graduation, the decision is driven by the need to be close to family and home. “I wanted to stay and study in Mumbai,” said Girija Gondhalekar, a second-year German (MA) student from Borivli.

“I opted for a PG course in a foreign language because I am aware of the opportunities it can generate. There is a great demand for translators and interpreters in foreign companies that have set base in India. Also, there is serious shortage of faculty in foreign languages,” said Gondhalekar.

But even Gondhalekar feels that a larger classroom will result in better learning.

“An ideal situation would be to have a class of 15 students where there is debate and discourse, and learning is fun,” she said.

MUMBAI- MU students to get hall tickets online

To avoid delays in issuing hall tickets to final year students, the University of Mumbai has decided to allot hall tickets online this year. It will be the college's responsibility to submit the student's examination forms online on the varsity's digital portal.

This is the first time that the University will provide online hall tickets to collegians. This facility will be extended to more than 500 Commerce, Arts and Science colleges, affiliated to the varsity. Last year, around 1, 45,000 students appeared for final year examinations from these three streams.

According to a senior official from the varsity, "This decision has been taken to avoid a delay in issuing hall tickets. Generally, mistakes creep into the hall tickets because they are issued in haste. So this time, the varsity decided to get online and save time.

Currently, the entire application procedure is manual. Students fill the examination form and submit it to the varsity. The varsity scrutinises this form and issues the hall ticket.

Once the procedure becomes online, it easy for the college and the students. If students spot any mistakes in the hall ticket, they can be rectified immediately.

"Last year, the varsity created a digital portal, and each college was given a separate login ID. Once the college submits the students' data online, we can issue the hall tickets and make them available online. Once the submission is online, we can easily correct mistakes," said Controller of Examination Vilas Shinde of the University of Mumbai.

"Most of the colleges in the city have the online facility. We also are going to organise a training workshop for colleges next month at the Kalina campus. The colleges can attend this workshop and if they have any query we will resolve it. From next year, this facility will be allotted across the sections. However, this time, it will be only be limited to colleges with three streams only," Shinde added.

DNA News :- Mumbai University To Give Excess land in Kalina to private players

Mumbai University To Give Excess land in Kalina to private players

The University of Mumbai reportedly plans to give unused land at its Kalina campus to private players in the name of “maximum utilisation of resources”.

Senate member Sanjay Vairal raised objections to the proposal in the senate meeting on Thursday.

“In its perspective plan for the academic year 2012-13, the university wants to rope in private firms to set up professional self-finance departments on the campus. The land will be leased for 25 years,” Vairal alleged.

Vairal told DNA that around 230 acres of land at the Kalina campus is lying unused. “The plan says the campus is spread over 12.5 lakh sqft. While classrooms have been built on 22,000 sqft of area, labs have been set up on 84,000 sqft of area. The rest would be given to private firms to start the self-financed courses. Each department will have to collaborate with a foreign varsity, but induct faculty from the MU.”

Many senate members were upset with the implementation of the credit system. “More than 50% of the teachers are not approved. We should have strengthened our system instead of implementing the credit system,” said Dilip Karande, a senate member.

“The student-teacher ratio is 50:1. This is affecting assessment work in the credit system,” said Arti Prasad from SIWS College.
Vice chancellor Rajan Welukar said: “When a delegation visited the US, varsities raised concern about the Indian education system and said students at US varsities face difficulty because of lack of credit system in India. They appreciated the MU for implementing it.”

MU NEWS :- Mumbai University not planning conduct second PhD Entrance Test

Hundreds of post-graduates who want to pursue research at the University of Mumbai have been left in the lurch. The university seems to have no plans to conduct the second PhD Entrance Test (PET).

In 2010, the UGC had made it mandatory for universities to hold PET twice a year.

After much criticism and delay, the university had conducted the first PET on February 27. The second test was scheduled for July or August, but even after a month no announcement has been made yet.

As per the rules, for the second exam, the university should have placed advertisements in newspapers regarding vacancies in various departments by June 10. “If they delay the exam any further, the results will also take time and we will stand to lose three to four months,” said a student.

According to sources, the university has no plan to conduct an exam because no department has submitted a vacancy.

Rajpal Hande, director of the Board of University and Colleges Development, put the ball in the controller of examinations’ court. “Only the controller looks after PET,” he said.

But Vilas Shinde, the controller of examination, said: “Once we are done with results of all post-graduate courses, we will schedule PET. Pending MCom results will also be declared within a week.”
