Income Tax collection: The government has collected an all-time high income tax of Rs 4.50 lakh crore in 2010-11, at least Rs 4,000 crore more than the revised budget estimates of Rs 4.46 lakh crore.This is in addition to all-time high refund of Rs 72,000 crore that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made till March 31, 2011 by clearing backlogs.

India is 5th most powerful Nation: India is the fifth most powerful country in the world, says the latest national security index (NSI) designed by the country's foremost security and economic experts., the NSI is based on an assessment of defense capability, economic strength, effective population, technological capability and energy security of the top 50 countries. The US is at the top of the list on the basis of these criteria followed by China, Japan and Russia. While India ranked third in the case of population and fourth in terms of defense capabilities, it was at the 34th position in technology and 33rd in energy security.

IMF Review: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) would review policies of the world's seven largest economies, including India and China, with the objective of rectifying flaws before they imperil growth. The US, Japan, Germany, France and Britain are the other five countries that influence the global economy.


India – Kazakhstan Pact: Cementing their strategic partnership, India and Kazakhstan signed an inter-governmental framework agreement on civil nuclear cooperation and some other key pacts, including a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty.

India's gems and jewellery exports: India's gems and jewellery exports jumped 46.89 percent to $43.14 billion in the financial year ended in March 2011.

PSLV C 16: India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle- C16 placed on a 822-km sun synchronous orbit three satellites – ResourceSat – 2, an Indo-Russian YouthSat and Singapore's first satellite X Sat. The launch went off as per schedule and the satellites were placed in orbit 18 minutes after blast off from the launch pad at the Sriharikota spaceport.

India's tea exports: India's tea exports in February this year fell by almost 11 per cent to 11.93 million kg, according to the latest Tea Board data. The country had exported 13.35 million kg of tea in the year-ago period, the data said.

Sathya Sai Baba: Sathya Sai Baba, who had millions of followers across the world, is no more. Baba's body was kept for darshan at Sai Kulwant Hall in Puttaparthi for two days. Puttaparthi is a small town of 25,000 in Andhra Pradesh's Ananatpur district.

Ambassador to Iraq: After six long years, India is all set to appoint an ambassador to Iraq. State of the World's mothers 2011: An average Indian woman's life expectancy is only 66 years, which is among the lowest in the world as per the findings of Save the Children's " State of the World's mothers 2011" report. The report ranks India right on top among the 12 countries that account for two-thirds of both under-five mortality and maternal deaths in the world. Overall, India's position has fallen further as compared to last year's index, slipping from 73 to 75.
Largest slum population in Maharashtra: A preliminary study conducted by the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) has revealed that Maharashtra, one of the country's most progressive states, has the dubious distinction of housing the largest slum population in India.
Cancellation of operations of Pawan Hans helicopters: The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has finally suspended commercial operations of Pawan Hans helicopters across the northeastern region, a move which came only after Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Dorjee Khandu died in a chopper crash off Se La Pass in Tawang district.

Jarbom Gamlin: Power minister and government spokesman Jarbom Gamlin was sworn in as the new chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh.
India and Israel are in talks to create a fund worth $50 million for mutual cooperation in the agriculture sector. Both the governments are planning to create a fund dedicated to agricultural co-operation with each side contributing $25 million each.
India's tea exports in March 2011 fell by 49.34 percent to 11.90 million kg from 23.49 million kg a year ago. India is the world's second biggest producer of tea after China.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2010: Veteran filmmaker K. Balachander has been conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2010.The government confers this award for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema. The award consists of a Swarn Kamal, a cash prize of Rs.10 lakhs and a shawl. The award is given on the recommendations of a committee of eminent persons. Balachander has been film director, screenplay writer and producer for more than 45 years. He has written, directed and produced more than 100 films in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada.

Abbottabad: is a city located in the Hazara region of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, in Pakistan. The city was in news as Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden lived in Abbottabad from 2005 until his death on 2 May 2011.

Sonu Sinha (Arunima Sinha): Volleyball player Sonu Sinha (Arunima) lost her leg after she was thrown off from a moving train by hoodlums trying to rob her. The player represented Uttar Pradesh in the nationals.

BRICS summit 2012: Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh announced that the next BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit will be held in India in 2012.
