THE season-8 of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) will feature a real life heroine, who fought against human trafficking and rescued many girls, on 21 August 2014. Fatima Khatoon. from the Khawaspur red-light area of Bihar, has rescued many girls and enrolled them in the Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) hostel.
Her father belongs to a semi-nomadic community. Acute poverty forced Fatima's parents to mam' her off when she was only nine to a man almost twenty years her senior. The only criterion for the marriage was that the man had a house.
To Fatima's horror she found out that she was married into a brothel and (he husband was a trafficker. She began resisting her husband and in-laws and even helped four oilier women, trafficked in her house, escape from there. For her "crime" Fatima was severely assaulted by her in-laws. Fatima Khatoon. who fought human girl trafficking in the bravest way possible, is one of the most important survivor-leaders of NGO Apne Aap.
In 2004. when "Apne Aap' started its community centre inside the red light area in For besganj. Bihar. Fatima was one among the first two women who started coming to the community centre. She has started the first women's group inside the red light area along with two other girls. Fatima is now leading Apne Aap Girls' programme in Uttari Rampur red light area.
A mother of six. Fatima. has played a crucial role in organising women 10 fight for their rights and the rights of their daughters to live their lives tree of sexual exploitation.
This gutsy woman has been a prime instigator against trafficking rings. She and her daughter have been constantly attacked by the traffickers who try to keep her daughter from going to school. Last year, a police officer kept her 14-year old daughter illegally In a police lock up all night. She appealed to the NHRC and the Bihar government for counselling for her daughter and accountability of the police officer. Fatima is one of the most important survivor-leaders of Apne Aap who is a vehement spokesperson against prostitution as a 'choice' for women because she believes that nobody wants 'to sell their dreams'.
